Ingredients
  

Bread
  • 1 loaf day-old bread, cubed
  • 1 piece onion, diced
  • 2 stalks celery stalks, diced
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 cup fresh parsley, chopped optional
  • 1 egg beaten optional for extra richness

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Melt butter in a skillet, sauté onion and celery until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Mix bread, sautéed vegetables, sage, thyme, salt, pepper, and parsley in a bowl. Add broth and egg if using, mix well.
  4. Transfer to a greased dish, cover with foil, and bake 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake 10-15 more minutes until golden.

Notes

For extra flavor, add chopped mushrooms or cooked sausage.
